10 Fun Facts about the Toyota Corolla!

The Corolla is Toyota’s best-selling model globally, with a trusted nameplate, affordable pricing, excellent fuel efficiency & each generation surpassing its predecessor, it’s no wonder the world LOVES COROLLA!

To celebrate our favourite car, we thought we’d share with you some fun facts of this hot little hatch!


1. The Corolla is so popular that somewhere in the world, someone buys a Corolla every 36 seconds, so by the time you finish reading this blog that’s 4 Corolla’s sold!

2. With more than 40 million Corolla’s sold as of 2013, the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling name-plate under the Toyota badge!

3. The first-ever Corolla was built in 1966, and it only took 8 years to become the best-selling vehicle worldwide! What a feat!

4. The word Corolla means “Little Crown” and was chosen in the hopes of an automotive bloom. In fact, Toyota is known for giving its models regal or celestial names (think Supra, Yaris, Celica & Camry).

5. Australia was the first-ever export market of the Corolla AND was the first to build it outside of Japan! Just 15 arrived in 1966 and they didn’t even go on sale until 1967!

6. The Corolla was built in Australia for 31 years spanning from 1968 to 1999. 666,700 Corolla’s were built during that time with the very last one being the AE100!

7. Corolla won its class at Bathurst in 1968 & again in 1969! Not bad for a model that was only 2-3 years old at the time!

8. The Toyota Corolla was the first-ever car to introduce WHITE reversing lights that all cars use today!


9. In the 3rd generation Corolla, the length of the liftback interior was determined by popular surfboards of the day!

10. It only took Toyota 16 years & 4 months to sell 10 million Corollas with daily production reaching an all-time high in 1980 averaging 2346 units!
