Talara Primary's "Living Classroom"
We love joining forces with our local schools and being part of empowering the next generation of Sunshine Coast leaders. We have built a strong relationship over the years with the mighty TEAK Team (Talara Environmentally Aware Kids) at Talara Primary College over the last few years. We have participated together in National Tree Planting Days and a group of Sunshine Toyota team members taught a class on Water Sustainability so the TEAK students could teach other students at the Kids in Action Conference and we are always keen to strengthen this partnership. Have a listen to what some of the students had to say about the Kids in Action Conference on ABC radio.
TEAK are in the early stages of creating a "Living Classroom" in their school grounds so that native wildlife can co-exist with the students. They asked us if we would like to be involved, and of course we said yes.
We recently met at Talara and the students showed us the spot at the end of their oval that was to be the Living Classroom. They shared their vision with us and we were so impressed with the thoughts the students had. Talara has enlisted the help of a permaculturist who was on hand to give the students her expert advice. She was positive that most of their ideas could be brought to life. Some of the ideas are:
- Log seats for students to read books on or talk to their friends
- A pond to encourage frogs
- Herb and veggie gardens for students to tend to in their lunch breaks
- Composting
- Signs showing the names of the plants and trees
The students are enthusiastic and committed to this project and we are excited to be on the journey with them. Watch this space!
