Our step-by-step guide for how to change a car tyre...
Don't let a flat tyre ruin your day trip! Amandeep, one of our Toyota Qualified Service Technicians walks you through step-by-step on how to change a tyre safely & correctly.
Hello I'm Amandeep a Qualified Toyota Service Technician at Sunshine Toyota & today I’m going to show you how to change a tyre safely & correctly. Before you begin, it's important that you make sure you are in a safe place. A few checks that I recommend you do are:
- Ensure you’re in a safe location that is away from the traffic
- You’re on a flat surface to avoid vehicle instability
- Your hazard lights are on & if you have a warning sign, it's important to put it on display before your start so that other motorists are aware that you’re there.
Equipment to change a car tyre...
There are a couple of things you will need to change your flat tyre and the good news is that all cars generally come with these items! They include:
- Spare tyre (either full size or a space saver)
- Jack
- Jack Rod
- Wheel Wrench
Step 1: Loosen Wheel Nuts
Loosen the wheel nuts in an anti-clockwise direction. Sometimes this can be a bit tricky so don't be afraid to push down hard & use your body weight if you need to.
Step 2: Place car jack underneath your vehicle
Place your jack underneath your car in the designated spot. This position can be found in the groove of the metal underbody frame. If you are unsure be sure to check your owners manual as placing the jack in the wrong spot can damage the underframe of your car.
Step 3: Raise the car
Raise the vehicle slightly until the tyre is just off the ground.
Step 4: Completely remove the wheel nuts & your car tyre
Remove the wheel nuts & place them to the side. Then remove the flat tyre of the car. For extra safety, we recommend that you place the flat tyre underneath your car.
Step 5: Replace with the new tyre
Place the new spare tyre on the wheel axle
Step 6: Pop the wheel nuts back on
Pop the wheel nuts back on and tighten them by hand as much as you can.
Step 7: Lower the vehicle
Lower the car using the jack, until the wheel is just touching the ground. Then you need to tighten the wheel nuts with the wheel wrench. To ensure it is even, we recommend you do this in a star formation.
Step 8: Give wheel nuts a final tighten
Lower the car completely to the ground and give the wheel nuts a final tighten using the wheel wrench
Step 9: Pack away all equipment
Pack away all of your equipment
After changing your car tyre we recommend that you get it checked by a professional to ensure that it is fitted correctly. You can book in with our team to have your tyre checked here.
If you have used a space-saver tyre its importnant that you get this replaced with a full spare as soon as you are able, as space saver tyres are for temporary use only. Remember space savers are only designed to get you to a service workshop to have your tyre replaced with a full-size one, you cannot drive faster than 80km/h while using a space saver tyre
