Queenslanders are spoiled with AMAZING camping spots! Some of the most amazing spots are within a couple hours drive but if you’re keen for a road trip we’ve popped in a couple gems! Check out our top camping spots to hit up with your 70 Series!
Teewah Beach
For true beach camping you can’t go past Teewah, in the Great Sandy National Park. When securing your permit you will need to select the camping zone you will be staying in, we love zone 3 for a nice grassy site! If you take the barge over from Tewantin make sure you have cash handy as there are no eftpos facilities. You will need to pack your portable toilet as this is now a requirement and the rangers are regularly checking. Take the board, esky, BBQ and marquee with you and enjoy a whole day around at the point. Day trips from camp to the Point is roughly 30 minutes depending on which zone you’re camping in.

Stradbroke Island
The Ferry needs to be booked online in advance and takes about 50 minutes to get over to the island. There are a number of camping options including grounds with facilities or self-sufficient spots on the beach like Cylinders Beach. No trip to Straddie should be complete without an afternoon at Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel, the views here are spectacular and the drinks are icy cold. There’s plenty to do including surfing, visiting the shops and cafes, swimming at the many beaches, trekking out to one of the lookouts or whale watching (between May – November).
Fraser Island
Just a hop, skip and a jump on the barge from Rainbow Beach head up the beach highway and set up camp at one of the many designated camping zones on the island. Fraser Island isn’t short of beautiful spots to lose track of the time, or get busy exploring Waddy Point, Eli Creek, Orchid Beach, Lake Mackenzie and so much more. Make sure while you’re here you are dingo safe and follow all signage relating to dingo safety.

Agnes Water
Get swept up in the magic of the Southern Great Barrier Reef at Agnes Water. There’s a few options for accommodation here but the Agnes Water Holiday Park gets you right on the beach front. Set up the rooftop tent just metres from the sand and waves or stay in a safari glamping tent overlooking the beach. While you’re here relax on the beach, surf the northernmost breaks in Queensland, or cast a line at its southernmost coral reefs. Use this as your base to explore Lady Musgrave Island, hire a pontoon boat and check out the wildlife, do a spot of fishing or explore the Paperbark Forest Boardwalk.
Mary Kathleen Town
Between Mt Isa and Cloncurry is the deserted Uranium mining town of Mary Kathleen Town. You can camp here for free, as long as you’re self contained. The old house sites make the perfect flat spot to pull up and enjoy the serenity. It’s had to believe that all the old slabs used to house the 1,200 strong population with school, tennis courts, bank, general store and even it’s own police station. There’s plenty of space between the old slabs so even if this place gets busy you won’t feel squished in. Use this as your base to explore, check out the old uranium mine or venture into Mt Isa. Best thing, you can also bring your best mate as pets are allowed.

Paronella Park
If this place isn’t on your bucket list it should be! Tropical rainforest and old ruins like you’re in a scene from Tomb Raider just 120km south of Cairns. The park was opened to the public in 1935 and featured a theatre, dance hall, tea gardens and swimming pool. Camping is included in your admission fee but is limited to 1 night, this is plenty of time to explore the park and even nip over to the pub for a good feed! Make sure you join one of the walking tours around the park which departs every 30 minutes and give you all the history of the place. Plus there’s an Evening Experience which sees the park lit up with amazing lights creates a beautiful experience. Be sure to book ahead though as this is a very popular spot!

Cape Hillsborough
A short 40 minute drive north of Mackay will lead you into the beautiful Cape Hillsborough National Park. Stay at the Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park and be surrounded by absolute beach frontage and the national park. You can choose to camp in the rooftop or there are cabins available. This is the ultimate destination to recover from the pace of everyday life. Cape Hillsborough beach is renowned for its spectacular sunrises with Kangaroos and Wallabies on the beach this is a sunrise experience like no other. Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Wallabies make their way to the beachfront each morning to feed on seaweed and mangrove seed pods which have washed up from the overnight tides.
