The Toyota RAV4, a compact SUV, has undergone several redesigns since its debut in 1996. Over the years, the RAV4 has seen significant changes in its styling, engine, and features. In this article, we will explore the various generations of the RAV4, from its first iteration to the present.

First Generation - 1996-2000

The RAV4 debuted in two- and four-door versions with a choice of front-wheel drive or permanently engaged four-wheel drive. A two-door convertible version became available for the 1998 model year. Toyota produced RAV4 electric vehicles to meet California’s zero-emission-vehicle requirements. Sales continued into 2003.

Second Generation - 2001-2005

The second-gen RAV4 was more spacious, bigger, and had sharper styling. It was only available as a four-door SUV with a spare tire mounted on the rear door that opened to the right. It had a stronger four-cylinder engine than its predecessor, with a larger 161 hp version introduced in 2004.

Third Generation - 2006-2012

In its next iteration, the RAV4 grew in size, gaining 14 inches in length and over 3 inches in width. The redesign also added an optional third row, increasing seating capacity to seven. The V-6 engine became available as an upgrade, and on-demand all-wheel drive replaced the old 4WD system. The larger four-cylinder engine arrived in 2009, and a Tesla-engineered RAV4 EV with an estimated range of 103 miles was sold in California starting in 2012, with production ending in 2014.

Fourth Generation - 2013-2018

The fourth-generation RAV4 features a liftgate and a spare tire under the cargo floor. The V-6 engine and third row were removed, leaving a 176-horsepower four-cylinder engine and seating for five. The RAV4’s overall length shrank and its styling became more aggressive. The 2016 model year saw the addition of the RAV4 Hybrid with all-wheel drive as standard, while the 2017 model year made Toyota's Safety Sense P active safety suite standard.

Fifth Generation - 2019-current

The 2019 RAV4 underwent a redesign, adopting a tougher, more rugged appearance than the previous generation's softer lines. Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, the compact SUV is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 203 horsepower and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It also comes standard with active safety features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control.
