Damaged windscreen wiper blades… it’s something we see a lot more than we’d like to. So we thought it was time to answer the top FAQs we get asked when it comes to replacing your windscreen wiper blades.
How often should you replace your wiper blades?
It’s a question our service team are asked daily. We recommend that you change your wiper blades every 6-12 months. As windscreen wipers are made from rubber, they do deteriorate and become less effective over time so the longer you leave it, the more damage you could potentially do to your windscreen itself.
What causes wiper blades to degrade?
Things like everyday use, wear and tear, UV rays, that amazing Sunshine Coast salty weather we’re all accustomed to and even the type of washer fluid you mix in with water can all cause your wiper blades to deteriorate. This often results in brittleness, cracking or even tearing of your wiper blades, none of which are a good thing for your windscreen.
How will I know that it’s time to replace my wiper blades?
There are a number of signs that indicate its time to replace your wiper blades. Things like leaving streaks on your windscreen, skipping spots, splitting and of course the dreaded squeaking are all really good indicators it’s time for a change. These things can also become a hazard if they start to impair your visibility when driving, so if you’re experiencing any of these it’s really important that you replace your wiper blades as soon as possible.
How often should I be checking my wiper blades?
We recommend checking your wipers regularly for signs of wear and tear. A good habit to get into is checking them when you fuel up or wash your car. Once a month is another good habit to get into.
What are the benefits of replacing my wiper blades?
- Improved cleanliness and protecting your windscreen: windscreen wipers use rubber blades on metal arms to push rain off your windshield. Over time, the rubber can wear down and expose the metal arm. If this metal comes into contact with your windshield, it can scratch the glass and these scratches can develop into deep grooves. Once that happens your only option is to replace the entire windscreen itself which can be a costly exercise. Simply replacing your wiper blades is a cost-effective way of preventing this type of damage from occurring.
- Improved vision and safety in rainy conditions: while you might not deal with rain on a daily basis, at times everyone has to drive through hazardous rainy conditions (especially considering the last year we’ve had!). Your wipers work hard to keep your windshield clear and visibility high during these conditions. Unfortunately, all this work means that, over time, they’ll start to wear down and leave smudges and streaks on your windshield that can make visibility even worse. So why risk it? If you notice they’re not working as well as they used to, it’s time to get your wiper blades replaced.
